The rum is triple matured, which means that during its 30 years of ageing it is stored in three barrels: Bourbon, Sherry and "Le Bois du Roy" barrels, the latter consisting of a highly protected wood from the four royal forests of France. The rum distilled from Virgin Sugarcane Honey acquires a chocolate brown colour through its deep ageing. Ron Zacapa Royal actually smells of chocolate as well as vanilla, cinnamon, caramel, oak wood, almonds, nutmeg and dried fruit such as raisins, bananas and oranges. The palate is full-bodied with the notes from the aroma, in addition to cloves, some tobacco and a hint of pepper.
