Omar Taiwan Sherry Cask Single Malt Whisky

Taiwan is not necessarily known internationally for producing award-winning single malt whisky spirits. In 2015, however, the Omar Sherry Cask Whisky received the silver medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC). The shiny red sherry cask bottling is a tribute to the whisky heritage of Scotland and Ireland. Hence the name Omar, which comes from the Gaelic and means something like amber.

Origin

What makes the whisky from the Nantou distillery special is without question its origin. The Nantou distillery is located in the center of the island of Taiwan between the mountains of the Bagua mountain range, which are up to 3,000 meters high. This supplies the production of spirits with high-quality spring water from the surrounding lakes and rivers such as the Maoluo River. The distillery has been producing single malt whisky since 2008.

Production

There are also special features in the production of Omar Sherry Cask Whisky: Unlike in Ireland or Scotland, it is so hot in Taiwan that around 5% more evaporates from the casks each year. It is therefore bottled at 70% alcohol. The Omar single malt whisky matures much faster in former sherry oak casks due to the heat.

Nosing

In der Nase präsentiert sich der Omar Sherry Cask Whisky mit einer intensiven floralen Duftnote von Marmelade, dunkler Schokolade und einem interessanten salzigen Hauch. Der dezente Duft ist fruchtig, süß und erinnert an Pflaumenmuß oder Rhabarber.

Taste

The whisky reaches the palate full-bodied and with a soft character. A sweet caramel note is combined with a gentle smoky hint.
